You Don't Have to Feel Helpless as a Parent!
Parenting is, without a doubt, one of the toughest jobs we'll ever have.
Yet little in life has the ability to touch our hearts more profoundly as being a parent.
Unfortunately, the only "training" most of us have for this vital role is our own childhood experiences..... And I'll bet good money none of us stood by while growing up objectively taking notes of what our parents did and didn't do and what worked! ;)
Successful parenting involves an ongoing process of trying to strike the right balance between providing the structure our kids need while letting them experiment and be themselves... of learning to be supportive while simultaneously learning to let go so that our children can grow up to become responsible and independent adults.
But how can you set effective boundaries while still protecting and loving your children?
And, if you're an adolescent, how do learn to listen to and respect your parents while still being true to yourself?
Fortunately, adolescent and family counseling can help...
Why Adolescent and Family Counseling?
I specialize in helping adolescents in their late teens (17-19 years) and early twenties navigate their new roles and responsibilities, and in helping first-generation immigrant parents with second-generation children.
Parents and adolescents typically seek my assistance to cope with and overcome:
The adolescent years can be an especially difficult for both children and parents.
If you're an adolescent who's coming of age and getting ready to leave the proverbial nest, you know all too well the new situations, responsibilities, and pressures you face. But you don't always know how to react to them let alone the best or healthiest way for YOU to react as opposed to how someone else wants you to.
Whether I work one on one with an adolescent, work with one or both parents (individually and/or together), or work with all members of a family at once, my role as an adolescent and family counselor is to objectively assess the problems your family is facing and help you figure out WHY they're happening.
Once we know why you're facing the issues you're facing, we can move forward, explore each of your individual communication styles, help you understand each others' feelings and reasons for behaving the way you do, and determine the best course of action to restore honesty, respect, and trust.
This is equally true for first-generation immigrants who are parents of second-generation children. While there are definitely specific societal, cultural, and communication-style differences that come into play in these families, each family's problems are unique and we'll begin by looking for the "why" before moving on to the specific skills and tools each of you can use to develop better relationships with one another.
While adolescent and family counseling is about helping your children listen, it's not about getting them to do what you want them to do... It's about making sure everyone in your family feels understood, respected, supported, and loved.
If you and your child are willing to do the work necessary, adolescent and family counseling can help your child enter adulthood with confidence and optimism, as well as help you feel proud of the relationship you have with your child and your role as a parent!
For more information about how the adolescent and family counseling services I offer can help your child and you, please contact me at 650-417-3561 or at [email protected] to schedule a free, initial 20-minute phone consultation. I look forward to speaking with you and supporting you in any way I can.

Parents and adolescents typically seek my assistance to cope with and overcome:
- Emotional Distress – routine frustration, anxiety, depression, or anger
- Academic Difficulties – poor academic performance, test anxiety, or problems starting or completing homework assignments
- Addictive Behaviors – whether it's drugs, alcohol, gambling, or the Internet
- Difficulties Adjusting – whether it's adjusting to new schools, college, new responsibilities and roles, or newly relocating to Silicon Valley
- Social or Peer-Related Issues – including difficulties keeping friends, making new ones, or problems with the behaviors of friends they already have
- Problems at Home – most commonly either disrespectful or impulsive behavior or isolating from the rest of the family
